Pescatore Vineyard and Winery: Newcastle, California's Best Kept Secret

Fate works in funny ways. By trying to support Mira Loma High School's first silent auction, I did myself and 5 other lucky wine afficianado's a huge favor. Had it not been for the fact that I had won a private food and wine tasting for 6, I would have never happend upon Pescatore ( We recently took advantage of this wonderful prize on a crisp fall day. The winery is off the beaten path, so you will not just happen upon it but with directions it is an easy, pleasant drive north of Sacramento to this Newcastle gem. Owners Dave and Patty Wegner were our hosts for the afternoon. They were warm and welcoming and eager to share their love of the grapes and the land that is producing award winning wines. After admiring the view of their onsite vineyard from the sweeping veranda, Dave took us downstairs to where he and his family perform their magic. The winery was established in 1997. The current acreage totals 15 acres and it is at the 900 foot elevation in the Sierra Foothill appellation. Most of the work is done by friends and family which include sons Tim and Steve, daughter-in-laws Misti and Noelle.

While Patty prepared an interesting assortment, Dave spoke lovingly about how the winery has grown. He also regaled us with interesting personal stories which I found particularly enchanting and really added to the wonderful atmosphere. 4 appetizers in all were served. A caprese bruschette began the feast. This was following by a smoked trout on rye with sour cream and dill. Dave had caught and smoked the trout himself and it was magnificent. A shrimp cocktail was followed by my favorite, Schiacciata All'uva or harvest flatbread with wine grapes, rosemary and blue cheese. You can find this recipe on their website. It is very exotic but suprisingly simple to recreate.

The wines were obviously the stars of the afternoon. They did not disappointment nor did their modest price points which prompted all of us to buy several bottles to celebrate a great day. The first wine was a 2007 Zinfandel aged in American oak. The notes were of spice and pepper. This was followed by a 2007 Petit Syrah that was a San Francisco Chronicle gold medal winner. It is aged in Eastern European and Hungarian oak. The flavors of berries and nuts shone as promised. A 2007 Syrah also produced notes of berries and was aged in American oak. My personal favorite was their 2007 Barbera. It is aged in an "hybrid" oak barrel and evoked the flavors of cherries. All agreed it nicely complimented the fish being served. A "fun" little wine that we also tasted was a stainless steel aged Zinfandel and Rose blend they call Zinato. The flavor that was most evident was that of strawberry and reminded me of something fun to drink chilled by a pool on a hot summer day.

Pescatore  is open everyday but they ask that you call in advance. Weekdays is by appointment only and weekends they are open 12-5. The address is 7055 Ridge Road, Newcastle, California. Phone is (916)663-1422. Check  for events as they periodically host dinners that sound like fun. Their most recent event was the first weekend of November. I know I will be returning!!
